The process: The finished product: FAQ
What is the process for having a stand designed and built? I will work with you or your designer to choose a wood species that's appropriate for your intended use and the space in which the stand will live. I generally do drawings by hand of as many angles as possible to show all details. I can also customize to your height (standing and sitting), stand angle, overall footprint, etc. Where do you get the lumber for your stands? All lumber for the stands come from local sawyers in the Pittsburgh area where I live. I whole-heartedly believe in using sustainably harvested lumber from trees that have been taken down and would otherwise be discarded or burned for firewood. I work with just about any wood species that lends itself to carving, but will consider just about anything. I do not stain woods and prefer to use species that are naturally the color of your desired end result. This helps with durability over time and is just much more beautiful. What type of finish do you use? I use a custom blend of boiled linseed oil, spar varnish and mineral spirits along with a seal coat of dewaxed shellac. These finishes are sanding into the surface to fill the grain and result in a very natural looking yet durable finish that lets the wood speak for itself. Where do you ship? I can ship a stand anywhere in the world. I always purchase insurance and pay for the item to be treated with the utmost care as it is shipped. If I have a design, will you build it for me? Absolutely! I love coming up with new ideas, but am happy to make your designs a reality. If you are interested in having a custom music stand designed and built I would love to speak with you.
